Houston Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. — what's working, what's broken, and what we'd do next

A hosting-client review from the team that already keeps houstonheatingandair.com online. It leads with the one thing that needs fixing this week, then lays out how a 53-year-old family business with a 4.9-star reputation should look on the web in 2026.

Flagged to our hosting manager — server-side check under way

Every inner page on the site is returning a WordPress "critical error" (HTTP 500)

Only the cached homepage loads. /contact-us, /request-service, /about-us, /services and even /robots.txt return the WordPress critical-error template, and the homepage fails as soon as a query string is added. That means the two buttons on your homepage — Request an Estimate and Contact Us — currently land on an error page, and the site is producing no form leads at all. Your phone number still works, which is why it may not have been noticed.

We have flagged this to our hosting manager. Evolve hosts the site and your team manages the WordPress install, so our first job is to check the server side (PHP version, error log, resource limits) and hand you the exact cause; if you would rather we do the repair, we can. The likely causes are a PHP-version change on the server, a plugin or theme that has fallen behind, or a corrupted file — all fixable, and none of them require a new site.

TodayOur hosting manager reads the server error log and checks whether a PHP-version change is the trigger; you (or we, if asked) roll back or patch the failing plugin/theme and restore the estimate and contact forms.
This weekConfirm all pages load, robots.txt serves, WordPress core/plugins/PHP brought current, a backup taken before and after, and a test estimate submitted end-to-end.
Going forwardMove to a managed-maintenance plan so updates, uptime checks and form tests happen every month instead of when somebody notices.

Also positive: HTTPS is installed and working; the BBB profile is live; 23 permits were pulled through September 2025 (BuildZoom) so the business is clearly active. Angi shows 4.0 on 4 reviews (last May 2023) and Yelp 12 reviews — minor, but they exist.

03

Website findings

In severity order. Each is something we observed on houstonheatingandair.com, not an assumption.
Critical

Inner pages and both lead forms return HTTP 500

/contact-us, /request-service, /about-us, /services and /robots.txt all serve the WordPress "There has been a critical error on your website" page. Only the cached homepage renders.

Fix: Identify the failing plugin/theme from the server log (see the flagged item above), patch or roll back, then a monthly managed-maintenance plan with uptime and form-submission monitoring.
High

Homepage copy is a decade out of date — "for over 40 Years"

Founded 1973, you are at 53 years. The H1 is the most visible line on the site and it undersells the single most persuasive fact about the company. The design itself reads as a 2013–2016 WordPress build.

Fix: Rewrite the hero around "53 years · family-owned · Eastern NC" with the 4.9★ / 154-review badge beside it. Longer term, a redesign on a modern, fast theme.
High

Navigation is two links deep: Contact Us and Request an Estimate

No services, about, financing, reviews, maintenance-plan or careers pages were found. Someone deciding between three HVAC companies on a Saturday has nothing to read.

Fix: Build a proper structure — Services (A/C & heating repair, installs, ductwork, energy audits, electrical, commercial refrigeration), Maintenance Plans, About / Our Family, Reviews, Service Area, Careers.
High

No online booking, live chat, financing CTA or maintenance-plan signup

The only working conversion path is click-to-call. After-hours visitors — the ones with a broken A/C at 9 pm — have nowhere to go.

Fix: Add an online "request service" scheduler (native to whichever dispatch software you use), a financing page and a maintenance-plan enrolment form.
Medium

154 five-star-average Google reviews, none of them on the website

No review badges, embeds or social links anywhere on the homepage.

Fix: Live Google review feed on the homepage and every service page; "Read our 154 Google reviews" link in the header.
Medium

No tracking tags could be confirmed to confirm

Because the 500 errors prevent source inspection we couldn't verify GA4, Google Tag Manager or a Meta Pixel. We'll confirm once the site is repaired.

Fix: GA4 + GTM with call-click and form-submit events; a tracked phone number for the website so calls are counted.
Low

Fax number gets equal billing with phone; no email shown

The header gives the fax the same weight as the phone; email is obfuscated/protected so it's not displayed.

Fix: Phone first and large (tap-to-call on mobile), fax to the footer, a monitored email address with spam protection.
Good

HTTPS is installed and working

SSL is valid across the domain — nothing to do here beyond keeping auto-renewal on.

Search (SEO) findings

Local search is where a 53-year-old company with a 4.9 rating should be dominant. Today it is nearly invisible.
Critical

One page indexed, and it's titled "Houstonheatingandair"

A site: search returns a single result. The title tag carries no service or place words, and the H1 is a slogan with no keyword. With robots.txt returning 500, Google will keep dropping what little is indexed.

Fix: Title "HVAC Repair & Installation | Greenville, Kinston & Outer Banks NC | Houston Heating & Air"; a real meta description; keyworded H1.
High

Towns appear only as a comma list — no city or service pages

No dedicated pages for Greenville, Kinston, New Bern, Morehead City, Washington or the Outer Banks, and none per service line. That's the content local search ranks.

Fix: Six service-area pages plus service pages for HVAC repair, installation, ductwork, electrical and commercial refrigeration, each with local reviews and photos.
Medium

No LocalBusiness / HVACBusiness schema detected to confirm

Source wasn't inspectable behind the 500s; we'll confirm after repair.

Fix: HVACBusiness schema per location with hours, phone, licences and aggregate rating.
Medium

Directory NAP inconsistencies

Website and BBB list (252) 524-5828; BuildZoom and Wheree list (252) 714-3212; the OBX entity uses (252) 717-3855. Birdeye shows hours 9–6, Wheree 8–5. to confirm which phone is primary.

Fix: Pick the canonical number and hours, then correct BBB, BuildZoom, Wheree, Birdeye, Yelp, Angi and Apple/Bing listings in one pass.

Category: HVAC contractor (Birdeye shows "Contractors"; Wheree shows "HVAC Services, Air Duct Cleaning Services") — the primary category should be HVAC contractor with Electrician and Commercial refrigerator supplier/repair as secondaries.

Address: 3532 Saw Mill Rd, Grifton. Claim status: Birdeye and Wheree both show the profile as unclaimed / verification pending on their platforms to confirm whether the Google profile itself is claimed and who holds the login.

Gaps: review velocity appears to have slowed; hours inconsistent (Mon–Fri 9–6 vs 8–5); no evidence of Posts, Q&A, or a products/services list; reviews not surfaced on the website; Greenville and Wanchese have no visible listings of their own.

Concrete GBP enhancements

EnhancementWhat it looks like for Houston
Review responseReply to every review, starting with the 20 most recent; a two-line thank-you that names the town and the tech.
Review generationText-message review link after every completed job (works from any dispatch app or a plain phone); target 8–12 new reviews a month.
Weekly PostsSeasonal: "Fall tune-ups booking now — before first freeze", "Ice-machine check for restaurants before tourist season", a job-of-the-week photo.
Q&A seedingAnswer the ten questions the phone gets: Do you service the Outer Banks? Do you offer financing? Are you licensed for electrical work?
Products / services listEvery service line with a from-price or "free estimate" — including commercial refrigeration and electrical, which most HVAC listings lack.
PhotosTrucks, techs, the Grifton shop, before/after installs; 20 to start, 4+ a month after.
Three listingsVerified profiles for Greenville and Wanchese (the OBX LLC) once we confirm the correct entity, address and phone for each.
UTM'd linksWebsite, appointment and menu/service links tagged so GBP traffic and calls show separately in GA4.

Six example posts, written out

Seasonal

"First freeze in Pitt County usually lands around Nov 9. If your heat pump hasn't had a fall tune-up, this is the week to book it — we've got openings out of Grifton and Greenville. ☎ (252) 524-5828"

Job of the week

"New two-stage heat pump going in for a family in Winterville today. Old unit was 19 years old and still running — we just made it cheaper to run. Ask us about replacement financing."

Review spotlight

"'They came out the same day and had us cool by supper.' — one of 154 Google reviews. 4.9 stars, 53 years. Thank you, Eastern North Carolina."

The family

"Houston Heating & Air started in 1973 with one truck. Today there are three shops — Grifton, Greenville and Wanchese — and the same last name on the door. Here's what hasn't changed."

Commercial refrigeration

"Restaurant owners on the Outer Banks: a walk-in that fails in July costs you inventory and a Saturday. We hold NC Refrigeration Licence #1920 and service Dare County from our Wanchese shop."

Electrical

"Did you know we're licensed electricians too (NC #11290L)? Panel upgrades, generator hookups and the wiring that goes with a new system — one call, one crew."

Paid search — a Google Ads starter concept

Only once the site is repaired and forms are tracked. Paying for clicks into a 500 error is the one thing we would not do.

What BICS adds

Once the estimate form and a tracked phone number are live, every lead can flow into whichever dispatch tool you use — or QuickBooks if there isn't one — so Mike can see, for Grifton, Greenville and the Outer Banks separately, how many calls came in, how many became estimates, the close rate and the average ticket. The sample dashboard we've built alongside this audit shows that view, plus which service line (residential HVAC, commercial refrigeration, electrical) and which town actually drive margin, and which maintenance-contract customers are due a tune-up before the first freeze. The one-page integration concept explains how the pieces connect.
